21 February (Ekushey February) International Mother Language Day--History



After the leaving of the British and establishment of Pakistan in 1947, there had been demands that Bangla be made the state language of Pakistan which is suggested by Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah in July 1947.
On 23 February, 1948 the proposal was presented in the Pakistan Legislative Assembly but rejected.
On 21 February 1952, a number of students demonstrating for the recognition of Bangla as one of the state languages of Pakistan were killed when police fired upon them. Mentionable language Martyrs are Abul Barkat, Rafiq Uddin Ahmed, Abdul Jabbar, Abdus Salam and others

Till 1971, the 21st February was observed spontaneously and functioned as an occasion to revive the feelings of nationalism and Bengali nationhood. The day became a national holiday after the liberation.
Since 2000, 21 February is also being observed as the International Mother Language Day.

In commemoration of the day Bangla Academy holds a month-long book fair and organizes literary and cultural events throughout the month.
